Glory Seed Devotionals, 2015: Year of Promise
Running away with Jesus…
Have you ever wanted to run away? I have. And I did. While my memory of how old I was nor do I remember what prompted me but I do remember sitting underneath the Tenth Street Bridge about 3 blocks from our house. I can’t remember how long my runaway escapade lasted but I remember getting hungry and going home. While my mom and dad were quiet upon my return I did tell them I was sorry for causing them to worry about me. However, I can’t be sure but I suspect they didn’t worry that much because they knew I would get hungry and come home. In retrospect I am so glad my mom and dad had established a stable home for us kids, unfortunately that can’t be said for all mom’s and dad’s.
All these years later when life begins to gang up on me my tendency to want to run away resurfaces and I find myself in a tug-of-war with myself. But now I’ve got a not-so-secret runaway companion (you’ve got one too) who has joined me in my tug-of-war and he quietly whispers, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while…” (Mark 6:3, ESV) Sometimes we go a park, sometimes we go to the Blue Water Bridges, sometimes we go to church, sometimes we go to the mall, sometimes we even stay here, and my favorite place we sometimes go the Smoky Mountains.
On my first runaway adventure I was running from something, which is the case in nearly all runaway occurrences. However, now we (Jesus, me, and sometimes Patti) are running TO someone, a loving God who loves, understands, and gives the Holy Spirit to strengthen and support me (us). It never ceases to amaze me how Jesus knows the right time to show up and invite me to runaway away with him. I am sure if you think hard you’ve your own runaway with Jesus story as well. Isn’t it wonderful having a friend that will run away with you just when you need a break from life the most?
BE strong in the LORD!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
Gary
