Putting a smile on Jesus’ face…
The other day at our local department store walking toward the service desk I walked by a grandmother and her granddaughter walking out of the store. The girl looked about 8 or 9 and was wearing a smile that stretched from ear to ear. It looked as if she just found out she found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, like she’d just won an Oscar, or she’d just met her favorite rock star. But she wasn’t smiling about any of those things her grandmother was wheeling a 20 inch pink girls bike. The look on her face told me it was her first bike and it took me back to my first bike, it was used and my dad bought it for $15.00 at the Carol House in downtown Port Huron.
When I think about it reminds me of how Jesus must feel when we turn our lives over to him and begin a new life. Jesus said, “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15:7, ESV)
Many times we think of Jesus as a 30 year old bearded man with long hair going around healing people, preaching about the Kingdom of God, confronting those gripped by greed and pride, walking on water, stilling storms, feeding many with only a minute amount, raising the dead. All those things are real but I believe that Jesus has another side a side that can only be described as a kid in a candy store, a kid ripping wrapping paper off from Christmas presents, a kid scurrying around collecting as many Easter eggs as he can, or a little girl getting her first bike.
I know there are times when we need a mature Jesus especially when we fail, or when we need forgiveness, or when the “fickle finger of fate” whisks us to the darker side of life. But when good things happen to us don’t we want a Jesus with an ear-to-ear smile to share the moment with us? Among our greatest needs in a world pretty much overtaken by a bunch of sourpusses and complainers is the need to Jesus’ smiling.
BE strong in the LORD!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
Gary
