The Sanctuary of Solitude…

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27 NRSV)

One of the greatest manifestations of Peace is found in the Sanctuary of Solitude, a sanctuary that exists outside our five senses. A living sanctuary allowing us to withdraw into a place where the sacredness of the Lord can not only be seen but experienced as well. For me the Sanctuary of Solitude is as simple as a photograph wherein time ceases to exist and we can withdraw for as long as we need to, a place where we can return to as many times as we need to.

The Sanctuary of Solitude is also as simple as a biblical quote such as… “Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts. Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth.” (Psalms 96:6-9 NRSV)

Put scripture and a photograph together and you’ll find yourself not in the bible or a photograph but with God in his Sanctuary! Christine Valters Paintner, in her book Eyes of the Heart: Photography as a Christian Contemplative Practice builds the foundation for photographs as Sanctuaries of Solitude. “The eye of aesthetic spirituality sees more than other eyes. Art in general, and photography in particular, helps to facilitate this awakening by granting us epiphanies through its transfigurations of the ordinary. We come to know more than what appears within our line of vision.” (Page 13 Ave Maria Press, Kindle Edition)

Paintner is saying that a photograph constructs the foundation and then the Holy Spirit not only brings the photograph to life but draws us in as well. And suddenly all we see, experience, and embrace is filled not with things but with God. And as long as we’re with God there are no seconds, minutes, or hours only God and all that God is.

Believe it! Experience it!
Grace and PEACE,
