A Planting of Faith Seeds for the Glory of the LORD
Darkness versus Light… and the winner is: LIGHT!
If you’ve followed my Glory Seeds for very long you are already aware of my thoughts on Light as it relates to Jesus. Light is such a powerful symbol of Jesus I cannot stop exploring and experiencing it. The following to verses from Isaiah pretty much describes my pre-I-really-need-Jesus-life.
“Before those people lived in darkness, but now they have seen a great light. They lived in a dark land, but a light has shined on them… But instead, some of you want to light your own fires and make your own light. So, go, walk in the light of your fires, and trust your own light to guide you. But this is what you will receive from me: You will lie down in a place of pain.” (Isaiah 9:2, 50:11, NCV)
I’ve never really considered lying “down in a place of pain” as a Light switch but as I let the present light of Jesus illuminate the past I can see its truthfulness and even now when I flip off the light switch and walk in my own created light its truthfulness I find myself reaching for the switch and suddenly the words of Jesus, “…I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness but will have the light that gives life.” (John 8:12, NCV) come to life and the Light of Jesus through the Holy Spirit shines in my life.
Yesterday while reading a book by Walter Brueggermann titled “Spirituality in the Psalms” I come across this hidden gem that added a new dimension to my understanding of how the Light of Jesus is working in our everyday life with all the dark clouds and corridors we find ourselves under and in.
“The reason the darkness may be faced and lived in is that even in the darkness, there is One to address. The One to address is in the darkness but is not simply a part of the darkness (John 1:1–5). Because this One has promised to be in the darkness with us, we find the darkness strangely transformed, not by the power of easy light, but by the power of relentless solidarity. Out of the “fear not” of that One spoken in the darkness, we are marvelously given new life, we know not how.” (Walter Brueggermann, “Spirituality of the Psalms” p. xiii, Minneapolis: Fortress Press)
“In the beginning there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made by him, and nothing was made without him. In him there was life, and that life was the light of all people. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it.” (John 1:1–5, NCV)
Believe it! Experience it!
Grace and PEACE!
