It’s one reason in debates I’ve been asking “When was the last time you read a work of scholarship that disagreed with you.” If someone doesn’t answer the question, I find it incredibly revealing.

That's our problem. Our culture relies on sound bites for arguments and thinks Google and Wikipedia are sufficient. This is also the case when college graduates who claim to be tolerant and open-minded refuse to have a speaker come who disagrees with what they believe.
College is about learning new things. It's not about cementing what you already believe. You should be there because you don't know everything, not because you think you do.Comment

Yeah, it's always annoying when someone expects a Bumper Sticker answer to a complicated topic.
