We cannot say that Jews joined the Roman army in massive numbers, but their presence was by no means insignificant. We could accept that Jews who chose to pursue a career in the military were not particularly pious, and that they were forced to relax significantly their observance of religious principles unique to their Jewish tradition, but that did not prevent them from considering themselves Jewish.
