The passage suggests a gentle/pagan and Antipas had gentiles (mercenaries) in his army. The word translated as centurion seems to be a generic for officers in any army. So it seems apparent that, if historical (or even if the creation of Matthew) the 'centurion' had to be a gentile - working for Antipas -for the passage to work. Then again it could have been a Roman on vacation in that lovely area:+}
What seems to be the case is that the evangelist didn't think it important to state if the centurion was Roman or not.
