Church History 201 Guidelines

Welcome to Church History 201.

Believe it or not, this is the exact place where Luther first posted the 94 thesis. We convinced him to add one.

This is the forum where the Church and its actions in history can be discussed. Since CH201, like the other fora in the History department, is not limited to participation along lines of theology, all may post here. This means that anything like Ecclesiology can be discussed without the restrictions of the Ecclesiology forum, and without the atmosphere of Ecclesiology 201 or the Apologetics-specific forum.

Please keep the Campus Decorum in mind when posting here--while 'belief' restrictions are not in place, common decency is and such is not the area to try disembowel anyone's faith.

If you need to refresh yourself on the decorm, now would be a good time.

In all seriousness why should I move my topic elsewhere?

Furthermore, reading his blog review on this book, Holding has a tendency to be economical with the actualité when it suits him.

I am not afraid of an individual like Holding. He is of a type I have encountered many times over the years.

However, it is his site and he previously did not like my posting to it and asked me to leave.

I therefore do not consider any comment I might make on that site would be overly welcomed by him.

I have just noticed you wrote the French version of imbeciles. I suspect you do not know the comment "economical with the actualité" to which I was referring.

Furthermore, it is hardly surprising that Mr McDowell was unsuccessful in his attempts to verify the alleged "martyrdom of the apostles" given that those accounts appear to be little more than Christian pietistic fiction.
History is often in the eye of the beholder. The accounts were passed down, and only bald speculation can determine that they appear to be "pietistic fiction". An a priori doubt about the historicity of the early Christian era's writings and oral history must feed your speculation.

You say that like it's a bad thing. There's no conceivable way to verify any account without beginning from a critical position.

Stories do not necessarily constitute historical facts. The various accounts of a Cinderella character may be found in numerous folk tales across the world. Should we assume there is some historical evidence for such an individual?

The evidence indicates that Christians were not generally persecuted by Rome for their religious beliefs. It was a political issue. However, there are some hilarious accounts of Christians begging to be martyred by Roman officials.

Furthermore, Rome regarded individuals congregating for secret meetings as a potentially subversive practice.
