I saw some bottles of that at my local Liquor Store... I believe it. For almost $50 here, it better be good.

On an related note I picked up some Bulleit Bourbon and some scotch called The Famous Grouse. Both of which are delicous.

I've heard The Maker's Mark is pretty good also... but it got Delisted where I am.
My bottle says the Jim Beam Black is "Double Aged" and says 8 years.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that Maker's Mark is my new preference. I need to try some Maker's 46 again. It makes sense in a way. I think I like slightly mellow whiskey -- rye aged long (hence the double aged Jim Beam), or a wheat whiskey (which can achieve a similar taste with less age).

On another note, I hear that the founder of Maker's Mark got some assistance from the Stitzel-Weller (Pappy Van Winkle) crew...which makes me want to get my hands on some Pappy Van Winkle even more....but I hear there's a wait list, and I don't have 1k to drop on a fifth of whiskey. :(

I'd love to try Pappy Van Winkle some day but, yep, it's way too expensive for me right now.

I tried Basil Hayden recently. It's definitely on the lighter side of bourbon at 80 proof but it has a nice crisp and smooth flavor. I'd recommend it for people who don't like a punch from the alcohol but would discourage the people who do like that punch from buying it.

Out of curiosity... is there any Irish Whiskeys that people can recommend? Right now it seems like my Provincial Liquor store only has three on-hand:

            -Jameson
            -Bushmills
            -Tullamore Dew

Have folks here tried any of these?

I don't recall trying Jameson. The other two are decent.

I've tried Jameson blended, which is good, and Bushmills single malt, which was also good.

I picked up a small bottle of Jameson today, and sipped some (both neat and on-the-rocks) as I watched some episodes of the Wild Wild West. Yummy stuff... I find the woodsy caramel flavor quite appealing.

I picked up Eagle Rare the other day. This is a really good bourbon that has a balanced taste to it. When I first tried it I wasn't really sure what to think but the more I've had it the more I like it and would definitely buy it again.

I bought a bottle of Bushmills Black Bush the other day. I have to say that, even though I've only had a small amount, it's likely to become my 'go-to' for Irish Whiskey. It's got a similar taste to Jameson, except with a smell and slight taste comparable to a good quality fruit cake.

I received some Laphroaig quarter cask on Christmas Eve and it was very good, especially for those who like peaty/smokey Scotches.

Any recommendations on a scotch to try? I'm a bourbon drinker, and I've only tried two scotches ever (Dewar's and Johnnie Walker Red). Neither were very good at all. Perhaps my expectations are misguided and I'm just not a scotch guy. But my ancestry is (mostly) Scottish, so I'd like to give it a fair try.

                            Dewar's is definitely not good.

Johnny Walker Red is not very good. Their other products are aged longer and consequently smoother. Oban and Tullamore Dew are good.

There are many different kinds. Do you want something incredibly smooth and refined for sissies, then have some Oban 14-year-old on the rocks. Would you like something that actually tastes like it still has some burning Scottish peat moss sizzling at the bottom of the glass, try some Bruichladdich Octomore.
