    as I said, many lawyers work on a contingency basis. If you win, they get a percentage of that win. If you lose, you don't pay anything.

        usually the losing side pays the court costs. If teal were to lose, her lawyer would end up paying (if she negotiates it right) and if she wins, the other side would pay the court costs and she would pay her lawyer a percentage of the judgment (probably about 1/3)

          Usually, the lawyer would only take the case if he knows he has a good chance of winning. His "fee" is typically about 40% of the award/damages/recovery. If he loses, it's simply the cost of doing business.
