Tony Gywnn passes away at 54
Tony Gywnn was one of baseball's greatest players and an outstanding human being. He died of salivary gland cancer which he attributed to chewing tobacco.
A 15-time All-Star with a record 8 National League batting titles, Gwynn had a career batting average of .338 which was the highest one since Ted Williams retired in 1960 with .344. He retired after finishing his 19th consecutive season batting .300 or better. He spent his entire 20 year career with the San Diego Padres forgoing offers of higher pay from other teams.
Tony and Alicia Gwynn's TAG Foundation and his charitable golf tournament were widely heralded for their work. They routinely took disadvantaged children into their home, providing teens with job skills through Alicia's business.
I met him twice and the man was a real class act.Tags: None
