I'm in Ohio visiting because my sister-in-law came down with Covid and Bob's not able to care for himself. My niece Roxy, pictured with Bejay above, called from Colorado to tell us Bejay was gone. Bob and Nancy aren't going to be able to travel to the services and I'm torn between my split duties to care for my brother and pay last respects to my sister.

Roxy had just gotten back to work after taking maternity leave, with Bejay taking over child care for their four-month-old baby. Roxy and Curtis had just finished a mother-in-law apartment for her, which is where they found her yesterday afternoon. It's possible she passed Wednesday night.

Yes, but she's had so many health scares, so regularly, that I didn't see a reason to think the latest one from a week ago wasn't resolving. Or maybe I was distracted thinking about my brother's family and wasn't paying enough attention.

Bob called me earlier this week saying Nancy was down with covid. He didn't say anything directly, but his tone of voice said he was afraid he was going to lose her. So I hopped a flight, ostensibly to help him get in and out of his wheelchair and get dressed, but mostly to be here if her covid condition worsens dramatically as it often does with older folks. I'm torn between thinking I need to be here if that happens and needing to be with Bejay's daughter and son-in-law for the services. I've also got two sisters in Colorado who can represent the family, but nobody to represent here if Bob and the nephews lose Nancy.

I'm not going to be able to attend any services this week. Next week is the first week of the Summer semester. The kids need some help with the funeral expenses and flowers are always nice, but it's obviously not the same as being there. What I can do, I'll do. I'm needed more in Ohio right now.
